It’s been so long since I’ve had a few Christmas parties to look forward to. Between lack of childcare, pregnancy and COVID, December has been a little dull over the past few years.
2022 is shaping up to be a little different, with not one but two already in the diary with the potential for another if we can get a babysitter.
Then I realised that none of my party dresses actually fit me anymore. Time to shop.
Day To Night Looks
We’ve been invited to a wedding at Edinburgh Castle, which means I need a dress that’s going to be suitable for a Winter wedding and the nighttime celebrations, as I won’t have time for a full outfit change in between.
This is where Very and their range of fantastic Monsoon dresses came in. I chose the Monsoon angel sleeve midi wrap dress (£139). It fits perfectly and the material feels really slinky. Wrap dresses are always flattering and the length is a great alternative to a full-length dress. I’m 5ft 8 inches tall and I always find that the normal ranges don’t quite hit the right length on me when I’m in heels but the tall ranges are just too long and I have to wear impossibly high heels to avoid tripping over the bottom of the dress.
Speaking of high heels, I chose these fantastic pointed-toe block heels from the Long Tall Sally range (£45). I always feel more elegant in a pointed toe but that usually comes with a really thin heel which I sometimes can’t walk on for very long. There are going to be lots of cobbles at the castle so these are perfect for the day and night events.
During the day I’ll have my wrap on to keep me warm but to make it that little bit more exciting for the night, I’ve teamed it with this fantastic short leather jacket (£100), which is great for throwing on over most dresses to make them a little less formal and a little more fun. Even though I went to uni in Newcastle in the early 2000s, I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere without a coat these days. I’ve done my share of standing in freezing taxi queues in spaghetti-strap tops in the middle of winter.
Accessories
Of course, no outfit would be complete without the accessories. I tend to go for simple, elegant jewellery. I always feel a little swamped in chunkier items, though I think they look fantastic on other people.
I always have my coin necklace which was a present from my husband not long after we started dating. I rarely take it off. But I’ve chosen the Olivia Burton classic rose gold bracelet (£45) and a pair of gold-plated drop earrings with cubic zirconia in them for a bit of understated glamour (£28). I’ll be wearing my hair half up during the day and these will stand out nicely against my dark hair.
Hopefully, I haven’t lost touch when it comes to putting outfits together. Stay tuned to my Instagram in December for some photos from the wedding day.
It’s been a tough year for everyone so if you get the chance, get out there and forget about things for a few hours in a fabulous outfit.
