Cosy Club Durham Lunch Review

When lockdown lifted in early July, we were a bit nervous about getting back into some kind of normality. We waited a few weeks but after spending four months trapped in the house with two young kids, we were desperate for some normality. 

So, one Friday in late August, the stars aligned. Both of the kids were at nursery. Scott had remembered to book a day off and I managed to get all of my work done for that week. 

We decided to do two of our favourite things, eat and watch a movie. Tenet had just been released and we’d wanted to try the Cosy Club on the Durham Riverwalk for a while now. The Cosy Club and the Odeon Luxe are pretty much next door to each other so it seemed like the ideal time to go. 

We booked a table for 1 pm so we’d have enough time for lunch and the movie before we had to pick up the kids. 

Venue

The restaurant itself wasn’t particularly busy, but Durham was pretty much deserted too. People still weren’t venturing out much after lockdown. The decor is a quirky mix of Victorian and colonial pieces, with wooden carvings and (fake?) animal heads on the walls. The views out of the windows are spectacular too, looking directly out onto the river and Durham Cathedral.

The Cosy Club Menu

Looking through the menu, The Cosy Club doesn’t confine itself to one style of food. There are dishes on there from all over the world so you’re sure to find something you like. There is also a good range of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes on there too. 

One thing the Cosy Club does well in brunch dishes, which I love. Even though it was lunchtime, I’m still calling it brunch. 

It took us so long to choose what we wanted. I went for the Ham Hock Hash (£7.95), with diced potatoes and a poached egg and an extra side of avocados. Scott went for the Cosy Club Sandwich (£8.95) with sweet potato fries. Both dishes were absolutely delicious, and we barely spoke we were eating everything so fast. 

Both meals were absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly. I could have eaten another one. 

For drinks, Scott ordered a fresh orange and lemonade and I sampled one of their mocktails. 

Unfortunately, because we were going to the cinema to fill up on popcorn and chocolate, we didn’t order any desserts, a situation I will be putting right on our next visit. We’re looking forward to going again in November around Scott’s birthday. We’ll definitely be taking our time.

We really enjoyed our visit to The Cosy Club. The staff was absolutely lovely, explaining all of the COVID and social distancing rules to us as well as being genuinely friendly and chatty as they were serving us.
