It’s fair to say, we’ve played it safe on the holiday front since having kids. We’ve become experts at staycation. Now, I’m not complaining too much. Britain has a lot of amazing places to visit and spend your holidays, but I also like to get abroad from time to time. I’m really hoping that they become citizens of the world and enjoy travelling to different places.
Now that Ava is a little bit older, I’m starting to think about the places I’d like us to go as a family in the years to come.
Barcelona
My absolute favourite place in the world. I’ve been to Barcelona many times over the years and I never get bored of it. I love the food, the people, the atmosphere. Everything. I’m gutted that the next time I visit I won’t officially be a European citizen. I’d love to start making memories there with the kids, and I hope they start to love it as much as we do. Whether you want a city break or a beach holiday, then Barcelona is the place to go.
Dubai
This was somewhere that wasn’t even on my radar until recently. A friend of mine moved out there at the beginning of last year for work and she absolutely loves it. The Dubai restaurants, beautiful buildings and scenery, ad the chance to learn more about a culture that differs from our own.
Edinburgh
OK, I’m in Durham and Edinburgh is not that far away in the grand scheme of things. But every time we’ve tried to get there, we’ve been stopped by illness, needing to stay close to home because of pregnancy complications or lockdown. I feel cursed to never have managed it with the kids yet. We have friends who live in Edinburgh and Scott spent a lot of time there when he was younger. I have lots of fantastic memories from visiting every year to cover the Edinburgh International Film Festival and staying at Twelve Picardy Place. The city is beautiful and Scottish people are really friendly, much like Geordies. We’re planning a bit of a road trip after lockdown. We want to stay in a lodge near Loch Lomond for a few days and then head into Edinburgh for a city break.
Rhodes
I have great memories of this place. I spent my 30th birthday there, more years ago than I care to remember. I’ve visited a few of the Greek islands and this one is by far my favourite. Again, there is so much to do there, from lying on the beach to visiting historic ruins that are all around the island.
Though we’re not making any concrete plans, when lockdown ends we’ll definitely be looking at options. We’ve never travelled abroad with the kids before and I’m wondering how they’ll cope with being on a flight. Luckily Alex is loving planes and all things space travel at the moment. One thing’s for sure, after being forced to stay home for over a year, we won’t be wasting any opportunities to travel in the future.
