Review: Fat Hippo – Durham

October 5, 2016

OK, so I am the first to admit that going to Fat Hippo is not the most romantic setting for an anniversary.  But boy did I enjoy it. At 36 weeks pregnant I’d been watching my red meat intake for months and decided it was time to enjoy myself for the night.  So, the biggest burger I could find was on the cards.

Friends and colleagues have been raving about Fat Hippo burgers to me for months. So we arrived one Thursday evening in September, with empty an empty stomach and my biggest elasticated maternity outfit, to see what all the fuss was about.

Set halfway up the cobbled bank of Sadler Street, the restaurant is a welcome addition to the eclectic eateries in the area. The Grade-II building has been transformed into a two-floor carnivore’s paradise while still keeping the character of the building.  Exposed brick, rustic furniture and a plethora of Edison bulbs give a comfortable feel to the place.

The welcome was extremely friendly, with the staff making sure we were seated downstairs so that I wouldn’t have to attempt to waddle up them and reassured me that all burgers could be well done.

The restaurant was lively but not too crowded and overall had a relaxing atmosphere.

Right, down to the food.  There were so many burgers to choose from but luckily I’d been looking at the menu for days and decided I was going for the ‘Filthy Animal’ (£11.50).  This beast of a burger came with double 4oz burgers, topped with cheese, pork rib, streaky bacon and Filthy sauce.  Served on a brioche bun with sides of Dirty Fries (£1.50) and onion rings (£3.00)

My other half went for the classic ‘Fat Hippo’ (£10.50) with double 4oz burgers topped with streaky bacon, chorizo, cheese, onion rings at Fat Hippo sauce. Served with Filthy Fries (£1.50) and house slaw (£2).

Washed down with a large vanilla milkshake it felt like the ultimate indulgence.  The food was cooked perfectly and generally elicited sounds of contentment whenever we took a bite. Pulled pork on a burger is now my new favourite thing.

Unfortunately, we were so full by the end of our meal that we couldn’t manage dessert (those who know me will be shocked at this). Maybe next time!
